How to convert a pair of leggings / tights to wear as a top. This is a popular option worn by Tribal Jewels, Ghawazi Caravan and loads of others and gives you a tight V neck (front and back) top with a front and back seam and off the shoulder fitted sleeves. Provided the tights / leggings are good quality to start with and not too sheer, they will last for quite a number of performances and any runs can be stopped in their tracks with clear nail varnish, or someone mentioned runstop. Stated measurements may or may not work for you, this will depend on your size but start conservatively and adjust the cuts once you can actually get the garment on. Not a bad idea to try this out on an old pair of tights so you don't ruin the good ones. You may get some bagginess under the arms as the excess fabric has to go somewhere and the more off the shoulder you make the top the more bagginess there will be, this also depends on your size and the size of the tights. These instructions are a guide only, if you find a better way let me know and I'll update these instructions. Instructions: Body section Take one pair of tights and lay them out flat and even, make sure the centre seams line up together and with the crotch facing you, use scissors to cut the crotch about 2.5" / 6cm along the centre seam up towards the waistband, if they have a fabric piece at the crotch you will need to remove that completely.
Arms (Legs) Go back to the crotch, if they have an inside leg seam then that is where you make your cuts, if not make sure the tights are flat and even and not twisted , and with scissors again cut each leg down the leg from the crotch towards the foot about 2.5" /6cm,
Try them on and adjust to fit Put your head and arms thru the waistband, ease your arms into the legs and head thru what was the crotch and adjust the size of the cuts accordingly. Don't force it as the fabric may rip, if you cant get it on or its not comfortable the first time... make your cuts a bit bigger an inch or 2 at a time and just keep working on it until the fit works for you. If you cut too much then they will fall off your shoulders however you may be able to sew them up again it just wont look as neat. The cuts work in the following combinations,
Remove the feet if there are any and cut the arms to length, leave a bit for shrinkage. You can also put a small cut at the bottom of the leg to loop around your thumb or middle finger but make it small to start with. Be creative!!
