CARAVAN SKIRT

**** WASHING ****

  • The dye from these skirts May come off on your hands etc and on advice from the supplier; they are Dry Clean only so I CANNOT recommend washing.

  • However, you may be able to do a cold water wash, others have done this with little if any problems, good idea to add some salt to the wash water to help stop the dye from running and dry flat in the shade.

  • If necessary you may also be able to set / fix the dye in the same manner as the Jaipur skirts using the following Fixing the Dye formula, I would try washing first before you try fixing, as I’m not sure how these skirts will go being soaked for a long period, in both cases I would keep the waist trim section as dry as possible.

This is up to you and I can’t give you any guarantees that either of these options will not cause problems.

Fixing the dye formula

Following is a good formula for fixing dye and is recommended by Carolena herself for the Jaipur skirts.

  • Place 1 /4 cup of Epsom salts or table salt in approx 4 litres water.  (You can use as much salt as you like in this mix)

  • Soak item to be "colour fasted" in this overnight (or at least for quite a few hours).

  • Rinse thoroughly in 1/4 cup vinegar to 4 litres water.

Salt not only sets the dye, but it acts as a cleaner (or maybe refresher) as well. Salt kills bacteria (i.e. odour) and sets the dye.

SIZE ISSUES

I’m sure you all know how to do this but just in case.

A) WAIST TOO LOOSE

Use the tie to tighten the waist or remove the tie and thread some elastic thru the waist band to fit.

B) SKIRT TOO LONG

These skirts are large around the waist and should fit most, if you find the waist too tight for your hips I can only suggest that you add in a panel the full length of the skirt in the undecorated section of the waist band.

To alter the length

  1. You have a small amount of fabric at the top of the deco waist band that you can use to take the skirt up, otherwise you will need to remove the waist band and take up the skirt proper then reattach the band, not a small job.   If you need to do this then you may need professional assistance with it.

C) TOO SHORT

Alterations should be done at the waist.  If all this seems very confusing you need to find someone who knows what they are doing to fix it for you.

To Lengthen: if the skirt is too short you need to cut another waistband and extension piece from your own fabric and attach it to the skirt.   Be careful with this as the decorative waist band may restrict your movement if it is too low on your legs.

Follow the directions for (B) point 1 then

  1. To make the extension piece you will need a piece of fabric, (stretch fabric is good) long enough to go round the skirt waist and whatever length you need to drop the length of the skirt to fit.  Included in these measurements should be 2 inches / 5cm for the fold over (elastic casing) and ½ inch / 1 cm all-round for seams.

    1. I.e. if you need to drop the skirt an extra 2 inches / 5cm you would have a piece that is 7 inches / 18cm deep.  Remember you are replacing the existing waist band as well not just adding 2 inches to the length.

  2. Cut the piece of fabric, join at the ends then fold the top over and sew this into a tube with right side facing out for the waist elastic, you need to leave an opening in the tube to put the elastic in later, sew up the side seam of the skirt where the zipper was and pin the extension to the outside of the skirt upside down, both right sides together, sew the extension to the skirt.

  3. Once the new extension has been attached, insert your elastic to fit then try it on for size and length then sew up the opening you fed the elastic thru.  Done.

I hope you enjoy your beautiful new tribal skirt, if you have any problems or concerns with it do not hesitate to contact me.
