JAIPUR SKIRT

I’m sure you all know how to do this but just in case.

**** WASHING ****

The dye from these skirts WILL come off on everything; they must be washed before they are worn.

The dye from these skirts WILL also run when washed, you need to set the dye before washing; following is a good formula for fixing dye and is recommended by Carolena herself.

Fixing the dye formula

Following is a good formula for fixing dye and is recommended by Carolena herself for the Jaipur skirts.

  • Place 1 /4 cup of Epsom salts or table salt in approx 4 litres water.  (You can use as much salt as you like in this mix)

  • Soak item to be "colour fasted" in this overnight (or at least for quite a few hours).

  • Rinse thoroughly in 1/4 cup vinegar to 4 litres water.

Salt not only sets the dye, but it acts as a cleaner (or maybe refresher) as well. Salt kills bacteria (i.e. odour) and sets the dye.

You can use this method every time your skirt needs a wash. I would always wash this skirt separately.

SIZE ISSUES

Please WASH the skirt before you play with it!!

A) WAIST TOO LOOSE

Use the tie to tighten the waist or remove the tie and thread some elastic thru the waist band to fit.

B) WAIST TOO TIGHT OR SKIRT TOO LONG

If like me you find the waist a little too tight for your hips you will need to make some adjustments to the skirt, you can also fix the length this way.

My skirt was a bit tight for my hips and too long.  This is what I have done with mine.

  1. Unpick the stitching on the waist band and remove it, unpicked the pleats at the waist and also remove the zipper, the waist now measures a large 92” / 230cms approx, this took me approx 1 hour in front of TV to do.
  2. Now sew up the side seam where the zipper was, then on the wrong side, fold over the waist of the skirt until the length is right, pin it then sew it down leaving a small section unsown to thread the elastic thru so now you have a new waist band, then thread elastic thru the waist band and sew up the gap and voila you have fixed the size and the length in one hit.

C) TOO SHORT

Alterations should be done at the waist.  If all this seems very confusing you need to find someone who knows what they are doing to fix it for you.

To Lengthen: if the skirt is too short you need to cut another waistband and extension piece from your own fabric and attach it to the skirt.

Follow the directions for (B) point 1 then

  1. To make the extension piece you will need a piece of fabric, (stretch fabric is good) long enough to go round the skirt waist and whatever length you need to drop the length of the skirt to fit.  Included in these measurements should be 2 inches / 5cm for the fold over (elastic casing) and ½ inch / 1 cm all-round for seams.
    1. I.e. if you need to drop the skirt an extra 2 inches / 5cm you would have a piece that is 7 inches / 18cm deep.  Remember you are replacing the existing waist band as well not just adding 2 inches to the length.
  2. Cut the piece of fabric, join at the ends then fold the top over and sew this into a tube with right side facing out for the waist elastic, you need to leave an opening in the tube to put the elastic in later, sew up the side seam of the skirt where the zipper was and pin the extension to the outside of the skirt upside down, both right sides together, sew the extension to the skirt.
  3. Once the new extension has been attached, insert your elastic to fit then try it on for size and length then sew up the opening you fed the elastic thru.  Done.

I hope you enjoy your beautiful new tribal skirt, if you have any problems or concerns with them do not hesitate to contact me.
