TISSUE SKIRT *** WASHING *** The dye from these skirts may run when washed, it’s a good idea to set the dye before washing; following is a good formula for fixing dye and is recommended by Carolena herself.
Fixing the dye formula Following is a good formula for fixing dye and is recommended by Carolena herself for the Jaipur skirts.
Salt not only sets the dye, but it acts as a cleaner (or maybe refresher) as well. Salt kills bacteria (i.e. odour) and sets the dye. You can use this method every time your skirt needs a wash. I would always wash this skirt separately.
I’m sure you all know how to do this but just in case. ELASTIC TOO LOOSE I envy you! - use the tie to tighten the waist or shorten the elastic, follow the “To Loosen” section below but cut the elastic and reduce the size rather than add to it.
ELASTIC TOO TIGHT If like me you find the elastic in the waist too tight you will need to loosen or remove it altogether and just use the tie. To Loosen: To do this you need to undo the 2 rows of stitching securing the elastic then undo a small section of the waist band closure (bottom) and pull about 6 inches / 12 cms of the elastic through, cut the existing elastic and add a new piece of elastic preferably the same width too it, to fit. Overlap the new elastic over the existing about 1 inch / 2 cms and sew together taking care not to twist the elastic or sew the tie or the skirt fabric to the elastic. Once the new elastic is fixed on both ends pull it back thru the waist band closure, check the fit adjust as necessary and close the small section of waist band closure. Finished!
To Remove: To do this you need to undo the 2 rows of stitching securing the elastic then undo a small section of the waist band closure (bottom) and pull about 6 inches / 12 cms of the elastic through, cut the existing elastic and pull thru taking care not to pull the tie thru as well.
TOO LONG OR TOO SHORT Alterations should be done at the waist. Do Not cut the old band off until the new band is completely finished. If all this seems very confusing you need to find someone who knows what they are doing to fix it for you. To Shorten: if the skirt is too long you need to cut another waistband from your own fabric and attach the new waist band to the skirt. You might be able to reuse the same band you need to check if the skirt gets wider the further you go down; if it does you need a new one. To make a waist band you will need a piece of fabric, (stretch fabric is good) long enough to go round the skirt where you want the new waist band to sit, and approx 4.5 - 5 inches / 11 – 13 cms wide. Be careful with your measurements and remember to add the depth of the finished new waist band to the overall length of the skirt into your calculations. Included in these measurements are ˝ inch / 1 cm for seams on each side and each end. Cut the piece of fabric, join at the ends then fold the fabric in half length ways and sew it into a tube with right side facing out, you need to leave an unsewn opening / buttonhole in the tube to put the elastic in later, pin the tube to the outside of the skirt upside down (with the join you have just made facing up), where you want to attach the band, sew the band to the skirt leaving the opening in the tube to put the elastic in later. Because the top layer of the skirt is double leave the existing waist band on until the new band has been sewn to the skirt this will help keep the layers together. Once the new band has been attached, insert your elastic to fit then try it on for length before you cut anything. Once the skirt is the right length and you are happy with the result then you can cut off the old band.
To Lengthen: if the skirt is too short you need to cut another waistband and extension piece from your own fabric and attach it to the skirt. To make this piece you will need a piece of fabric, (stretch fabric is good) long enough to go round the skirt and whatever length you need to drop the length of the skirt to fit. Included in these measurements should be ˝ inch / 1 cm all-round for seams. Cut the piece of fabric, join at the ends then fold the top over and sew this into a tube with right side facing out for the waist elastic, you need to leave an opening in the tube to put the elastic in later, pin the extension to the outside of the skirt upside down (with the join you have just made facing up), where you want to attach the extension, sew the extension to the skirt. Because the top layer of the skirt is double leave the existing waist band on until the new extension has been sewn to the skirt this will help keep the layers together. Once the new extension has been attached, insert your elastic to fit then try it on for length before you cut anything. Once the skirt is the right length and you are happy with the result then you can cut off the old band. I hope you enjoy your beautiful new tribal Skirt, if you have any problems or concerns with them do not hesitate to contact me.
